Tips on How to Quit Smoking Right Now
Wouldn’t you like it if you could just quit smoking right now? Quitting smoking greatly reduces the chances of lung cancer and many other serious health issues. However, most of us are already aware of the reasons to quit smoking, so what I would prefer to do is try and show you how to quit smoking and live a healthy life from here on out!
The number one thing you have to know to quit smoking right now is that it is all about you and your mentality. If you don’t have the passion and desire to stay motivated and resist the call of those cigarettes, you are going to have a very difficult time. You have to really, really want it and remember that. When you get a craving you need to ask yourself: “What do I want more? Do I want to smoke this one cigarette right now, or do I want to quit smoking right now and live the rest of my life the way I was meant to?”
Many people find it helpful to take on some new ritual to replace that of smoking. It can help distract you until you forget that you ever wanted a cigarette to begin with! Of course, the most common is to chew gum such as nicotine gum, which can help to satisfy the nicotine craving without resorting to having a smoke. There is also the patch, which is less popular but many find it to be just as effective as nicotine gum.
Many people debate with themselves on whether it is better to go cold turkey vs weaning one’s self off gradually. The answer is personal and will differ among everyone. For example, when I decided it was time to quit I just said to myself “That’s it – I’m going to quit smoking right now. This is my last cigarette, and I’m done. Period.” Well, it turned out my bark was harsher than my bite and I didn’t follow through at all – I think I made it about 12 hours. Quitting smoking cold turkey ultimately comes down to willpower. If you have enough desire and motivation to stay away from the cancer sticks you will be able to do it! However, if you’re like me and get impulsive and can’t resist, you may be better off weaning yourself off day by day. I used a cigarette box to help me do this – I left all the cigarettes at home except for what I was allowing myself for that day. I started out with a pack, went down to 18, then 16, then 14, and so on, until I was smoking just 2 cigarettes a day. I avoided convenience stores and gas stations I used to go to to buy smokes and stayed committed to my plan. Eventually, I went to have my second cigarette of the day and realized I didn’t even really want it any more – I stamped it out and that was that.
If you want to quit smoking right now, you need to be committed to whatever plan of action you take, whether you want to quit cold turkey, use nicotine gum, or just wean yourself off gradually. There are also many other methods available, including some available online which people have successfully used to quit smoking. Just remember to stay true to your plan and don’t give in – it could save your life!
