Sprint HTC Evo - The First 4G Phone

Sprint 4G Technology and the HTC Evo

Sprint 4G technology is supposed to provide revolutionary cellular data speeds and change what’s possible to do online with your mobile phone. Sprint 4G technology is rolling out this year, and while a few select areas have it right now, it is supposed to be available in most, if not all, major metropolitan areas by the end of the year.

The first 4G phone is the HTC Evo. Currently, it is the only 4G phone available anywhere but is in such high demand it is nearly impossible to get one. The phone is amazing and as far as hardware goes it is one of the best, if not the best, cell phones in the world. It features an 8mp camera which shoots 720p video as well as a front facing 1.3 megapixel camera which can be used for self shots and video chats. It has a blazing fast 1GHz snapdragon processor, which means this beast of a phone can handle things other phones simply can not do. This opens a lot of possibilities for games and other tools and computer like activities which lesser smart phones will not be able to handle in an orderly fashion.

The screen is absolutely massive at 4.3 inches, and it looks gorgeous. It’s extremely bright and clear and everything looks great on it. This is the largest screen on any cell phone anywhere and it looks like a monster – the phone itself covers about 2/3 of my face when I hold it up to talk. Its about 6 oz, so it doesn’t feel too heavy although it is heavier than most phones, and it has a kick stand on the back for easy viewing of videos or if you want to leave notes on it or whatever. At first I thought the kick stand was a bit tacky but I have found that I use it a lot now, simply because it is just too convenient.

Now, 4G technology is not really available, as previously mentioned, so I haven’t even been able to do any testing on the 4G network. However, from what I have read online it is quite a bit faster than what most of use are used to in the US but apparently it straight up murders the battery on the Evo. This is very disappointing to me because if a phone doesn’t have a good battery life then as far as I’m concerned it is essentially useless. Speaking of battery life and the Evo, it is really incredible that this thing can even last a whole day considering the processing speeds and the screen size. All android phone users should be using advanced task killer though – this is a free app you can get in the marketplace which shuts down all running programs, which helps make the battery last way way way longer. Without it you will be hardpressed to get a whole day out of the Evo and most other android phones.

Unfortunately, I have to conclude that if you are getting the HTC Evo just because it is the first 4G phone, you are making a big mistake. Sprint 4G technology is not rolled out in enough places to be a reason to buy, plain and simple. However, if you want a fat phone with a huge screen and fast processor, this one can’t be beat. And, at only $199 with a contract, the camera in the phone alone is worth the price.
