Herbs to Help Quit Smoking
72Five Herbs to Help Quit Smoking
Herbs to help quit smoking have been around for a long time, and most of them have been used for various purposes throughout time. However, some herbs can help ease the anxiety and discomfort which traditionally accompany smoking cessation. It is good to be aware, however, that most of these herbs are primarily known for easing anxiety, restlessness, and aiding relaxation. Therefore, most herbs to help quit smoking will mainly diffuse a quitter’s feelings of restlessness and anxiety without providing a nicotine fix, unlike most mainstream quitting smoking aids.
St. John’s Wort is well known for promoting a positive attitude and easing anxiety. If you have ever tried to quit smoking before (and most people who eventually quit do try at least once or twice before they succeed!) then you know how irritable and anxious you can get during that time. St. John’s Wort can help relieve these feelings to some extent, and I would recommend it as the first herbal remedy to use to help quit smoking.
Catnip is also known for its relaxation benefits. Yes, that’s right, catnip! Catnip is especially known to be good for digestion and stomach problems. Although you will probably not experience any stomach problems associated with quitting smoking, the relaxing property may help. Catnip is also a good herb to help quit smoking because it can relieve insomnia to some extent, which you may experience during those first nights without a cigarette.
A Catnip Plant
Popular for its sedative properties, Valerian root is another great herb to help quit smoking. And, I know I put catnip above it, but I would have to recommend this herb after St. John’s Wort simply because it is known to be one of the most effective. People who are having anxiety, insomnia, or excessive stress often use valerian and as you most likely know, many of the symptoms are also present when you are trying to quit smoking.
Skullcap is a lesser known herb but effective none the less. It contains natural compounds which help the brain in producing endorphins, which create a feeling of well being and sometimes even ecstasy. Also good for the central nervous system, skullcap is alleged to promote calmness while allowing one to remain aware and alert, making it a great herb to help quit smoking.
Peppermint is, without a doubt, the most delicious herb to help quit smoking! Peppermint is an effective muscle relaxant and also assists the digestive system. Another anxiety reducer, peppermint oil also acts as an anesthetic and can be very helpful and calming if you have to fight off a craving.
As a quick disclaimer, you should be aware that none of the above is evaluated by the FDA and it is a good idea to see a doctor before self medicating with any of the above. However, they are quite mild effects and although they can be effective, the majority of people should have little, if anything, to worry about when using herbs to help quit smoking. Hopefully these herbs can help you quit smoking right now or in the very near future! Stay determined and if you are feeling weak, then try some valerian root tea.
Good luck!
